Why Red Dead Redemption 2 Could Win Game of the Year 2018

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is nominated for the Game Awards’ Game of the Year 2018. It joins five other amazing titles — you can see the full list of nominees below. On top of that, Rockstar’s western epic is nominated for seven other awards, including Best Narrative and Best Action/Adventure game. God of War has the same number of nominations, but our money is on Rockstar Games to take the grand prize. Why? Here are three big reasons why Red Dead Redemption 2 could win Game of the Year 2018.

1. A story that draws you in

Just one more job, just one more big score. Countless plots begin that very same way, but from there Rockstar takes the story to the unexpected.

Picture this: the year is 1899, a bank robbery has just gone wrong and times are changing. The Wild West era ends, giving way to the new modern age. Bounty hunters and federal agents breathe down your neck and come after other outlaws like you.

As Arthur Morgan, member of the Van der Linde gang (and now a fugitive), your only choice is to flee to survive. While travelling deeper into America’s heartland, your gang starts to unravel. You must decide how much of your old life you’ll leave by the wayside, and where your journey will lead.

2. It’s all in the details

Sometimes you don’t realise what you’ve been missing in a game until it’s right there in front of you. We never knew that features like dirt accumulating under your character’s fingernails, or horses dynamically pooping could add so much to a game! There are so many instances in Red Dead Redemption 2 where you find yourself wondering: “ Hmmm.. I wonder if I can do this…” And the answer is usually: “yes, yes you can.”

3. The Open World

The map in Red Dead Redemption 2 is massive, and the number of things to do is staggering. But the best thing about Red Dead’s open world is how real it feels. The world in RDR2 feels like a living, breathing entity. Everything in the game feels like it existed before you started playing and will go right on even after you turn the game off.
