The Battle Comes to Earth

PC Gamer: “One of the most intense shooters ever.”

All the demon-slaying, BFG-shooting, explosive gore that we know and love from the DOOM series is back and more ambitious than ever before. Somehow, legendary developer id Software was able top their 2016 reboot of the franchise and create what IGN calls “one of the best first-person shooter campaigns in years.”

Nothing really compares to Doom when you’re looking for a fast-paced “power fantasy”, and Eternal intensifies this experience “by requiring you to constantly calculate the best ways to rip, tear, and stay alive.” The badass soundtrack helps too.

The Only Thing They Fear… Is You.

What’s Doom Eternal’s premise? Well, as the game’s creative director puts it;

“Imagine if Sam Raimi made a true sequel to Evil Dead 2, but he had Avengers budget. That’s what Doom is.”

Demons have invaded Earth, and the Doom Slayer (you) is once again humanity’s only hope. Sounds simple enough, but Doom Eternal is “anything but a ‘dumb shooter’”.

Doom Eternal’s new gameplay is described as a “relentless assault of ferocious ultraviolence” by PC Gamer, and the game’s first 3 hours throw more at you than all of Doom 2016” according to GameSpot. But, perhaps most importantly, Doom Eternal is simply a really good time.

Executive producer Marty Stratton explained to Polygon that one of the best things about working on Doom in 2020 is that he and his team “get to make a big-budget, AAA game with an outlandish premise.” “We don’t have to take ourselves too seriously,” he added.

And, although we don’t really need it, there’s much more offered in Doom Eternal than just Demon Slaying. Platforming acrobatics, puzzles, and other surprises await as well.

“We had to do more than give you great skate parks to murder demons in”, Creative Director Hugo Martin explained. “We needed to make the areas between the skate parks just as engaging with these little combat puzzles to be solved.”

All-New Multiplayer Experience – Battlemode

Take on your friends in Doom Eternal’s new competitive experience “Battlemode”; a 2v1 mode where one player controls the Doom Slayer and two others team up as their choice of demonic hell beast.

Described as a “fighter” by Bethesda, the mode is a 3-round tactical bloodsport in which you’ll need to employ strategy and cooldown management to defeat your opponent. Battlemode looks like it will be a major part of the Doom Eternal package, both now and in the future. You can expect frequent updates, seasonal events, and tons of unlockable cosmetics and emotes. Here’s how Bethesda explains it:

Unlock various skins, animations, and podiums by playing DOOM Eternal. Personalize your DOOM Slayer for photo mode and the single-player campaign. Then, slay with your friends in BATTLEMODE, where you can personalize your DOOM Slayer and playable demons.
