Amnesia: Rebirth Is a Horror Masterpiece That Revives the Dark Heart of the Series

Amnesia: Rebirth review: A scary sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent - Polygon

Creators of some of the PC’s most beloved horror games, Frictional Games is a master of the genre. Amnesia: Rebirth is the developer’s newest descent into darkness, and it’s out today. Prepare yourself for a harrowing first-person journey that builds upon the themes of the first two games in the series, and utilizes the tension-building mechanics we’ve seen in Frictional’s other terrifying titles.

Catch up on the previous entries in the series by picking up the massively discounted Amnesia Collection in the CDKeys store now. In their glowing review of the game, PC Gamer explains how Rebirth fits into the trilogy:

If The Dark Descent scratched the surface of the Amnesia mythos and 2013’s A Machine for Pigs gave us a glimpse below the skin, Rebirth takes us all the way into its eldritch heart.

The Only Thing You Have to Fear…

You awake deep in the Algerian desert. Where you’ve been, what you’ve done, and where you’ll go is a horrifying mystery that unravels before you. If you’ve played The Dark Descent and A Machine for Pigs, many of the series’ unanswered questions will soon be explained as well. However, the world, the terrifying atmosphere, and the story are perfectly accessible for new players too.

Explore the Limits of Human Resilience

Like previous Frictional Games releases, the terror comes from within in Amnesia: Rebirth. Horrible things lurk in the dark and disturbing scenes loom around every corner; but it’s your own “fear” that will consume you if you’re not careful.

Like The Dark Descent, you’ll need to stay in the light (whether by use of matches, torches, or lanterns) to maintain your sanity. This signature fear mechanic that the series is known for builds tension and terror in a way that many other games cannot.

Here’s a tl;dr rundown of Amnesia: Rebirth’s gameplay. Along with the video above, this should be enough for you to know that you should play this one with the lights ON.

  • First-person narrative horror experience
  • Explore environments and uncover their histories.
  • Overcome puzzles that stand in your way.
  • Carefully manage your limited resources, both physical and mental.
  • Encounter horrific creatures and use your wits and understanding of the world to escape them.
