After a surprise announcement last week, developer Firaxis Games and publisher 2K are set to drop a brand new XCOM game this Friday (April 24).
XCOM: Chimera Squad is a new chapter for the well-known franchise; with enhanced features and the same tactical shooter action we expect. As lead designer Mark Nauta describes: “there were exciting gameplay opportunities yet to be discovered within the XCOM universe.”

XCOM: Chimera Squad picks up 5 years after the events of XCOM 2 with an original, character-driven storyline. Humanity may have won the battle for Earth, but the war is far from over. There’s something eating away the planet’s civilization from within, and it’s up to the Chimera Squad (an elite team of both human and alien agents) to stomp the Overlords out for good.
Each member of the Squad’s 11 agents brings their own unique abilities, personalities, and even species-specific attacks to the fight. And each of the agents’ varied class types can be combo’d for devastating potential.
We’ve talked about the Squad, now let’s get to the gameplay.
In Chimera Squad, it’s your job to manage your team’s classes, upgrade their skills, plan your attack, and respond to the enemies’ counterattacks just like previous XCOM’s games. However, new enhancements like Breach Mode, “a new combat phase that injects your squad right into action”, and Interleaved Turns (a way to pre-queue agents to respond to specific threats) make the new gameplay fresh and exciting. To sum it up, XCOM: Chimera squad is:
A new experience that innovates on XCOM’s turn-based legacy; utilizing strategy, teamwork, and new breach-and-clear gameplay to complete your mission objectives.
