After our first play-through of Resident Evil 2, we were happy just to be alive. But that’s when the fun begins if you want to unlock some of the best features of the game.
In addition to a new way to play through Leon and Claire’s story (also called “B scenario”), there are loads of unlockables available. These include new survivors, new costumes, and legendary infinite ammo weapons by perfecting your play-throughs.
How do you do it? Well, do you remember seeing that time when you paused the game? Yep, Capcom is grading you while you battle for survival in Resident Evil 2. That grade is what will determine whether you’re able to unlock infinite ammo weapons.
How to get S and S+ Rank in Resident Evil 2
You can’t unlock any infinite ammo weapons without earning a rank of “S” or “S+” at the end of the game. The time it takes you to complete the entire game is the deciding factor for S Rank and for S+ you’ll have an even bigger challenge.
S Rank on Standard Difficulty
Speed is the only thing that matters to earn this rank, so prepare to do a lot of running and dodging. You’ll need to beat the entire game in under 3 hours and 30 minutes if it’s your first play-through. Also, in any future runs (B scenario) the time limit has decreased to 3 hours.
S Rank on Hardcore Difficulty
Once again, time is crucial, and you now have even less of it. On Hardcore mode, you’ll need to complete the entire game in under 2:30 for scenario A (first playthrough). For scenario B, it’s 2:00.
S+ Rank
To earn the highest rank in the game, you’ll need to achieve 3 things:
- Complete all of Resident Evil 2 within the S Rank time limits listed above
- Not use any infinite weapons you’ve unlocked or DLC Deluxe weapons you’ve purchased
- Manually save the game a maximum of 3 times
Whenever you unlock a new weapon, it will appear in any item chest once you start a new scenario. Speaking of which, let’s talk about all the goodies you can earn for your hard work.
Infinite Ammo Weapons
You’ll need to earn an S or S+ Rank to score any of these special weapons. For some, you’ll also need to have the difficulty cranked up to “Hardcore”. Here’s the list of all of the infinite ammo weapons you can unlock and what you need to do to unlock them:
Infinite Ammo Samurai Edge Handgun
- Earn S Rank on Standard difficulty. Works for both Claire and Leon’s stories (and both A and B scenarios).
Infinite Ammo LE-5 Submachine Gun
- Earn S Rank on Hardcore difficulty. Works for both Claire and Leon’s stories (and both A and B scenarios).
Infinite Ammo ATM-4 Rocket Launcher
- Earn S+ Rank on Hardcore (with Leon’s story only).
Infinite Ammo Minigun
- Earn S+ Rank on Hardcore (with Claire’s story only).
Tips to Help You Survive
Most importantly, manage your timer. When you die (which you will probably do a lot), don’t continue from the death screen. If you do, the timer will keep rolling from where it was when you died. Instead, quit to the main menu when you die and load your last saved game from there.
Keep in mind that the timer does stop sometimes. You’re free to take a breather when the game is paused or while you’re looking at the map/reading documents you’ve found.
One more thing: try to earn S Rank in Standard mode before attempting the harder tasks. Getting S Rank in Hardcore will be a lot easier with an infinite ammo Samurai Edge handgun in your back pocket.
