October’s line-up of free games for Xbox Live Gold members has a slightly spooky Halloween flavour. How so? Read on!
Xbox One
From the 16th of October to the 15th of November, Gold members can get their hands on Telltale Games’ spectacular The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season. If zombies are your thing, , or just want something to get your pulse racing this Halloween, this free game tells an original story set in the hit comic-book’s world.
Featuring exciting decision-based gameplay, The Walking Dead is filled with gripping moments, putting players in one sticky situation after another as they struggle to survive in a walker-filled world. This game series has been a big hit with fans and critics alike, picking up more than 90 Game of the Year awards, from Spike, Yahoo! Games, Wired.com, Destructoid, Official Xbox Magazine, GamesRadar, and many more.
Also on Xbox One, Gold members can download Valiant Hearts: The Great War, from the 1st to the 31st of October. This puzzle adventure game is set during World War One, and follows four characters as they help a young German soldier search for his love. This title won two awards at the 2014 Game Awards: Best Narrative and Games for Change.
Valiant Hearts includes various gameplay elements, with wartime scenes pitting the player against gunfire, stealth-based sections requiring a cautious approach to avoid enemies, and even car chases accompanied by classic songs. At times, loyal sidekick Walt the dog can be essential to progression, entering otherwise-hidden areas and fetching items.
Xbox 360
On Xbox 360, Gold Live members can also download The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season. This is available for download between the 16th to the 31st of October, and features the same episodes as the Xbox One edition.
Last but by no means least, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is available for free between the 1st and 15th of October. This is a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V, and follows Snake as he breaks into a Cuban site titled Camp Omega. He’s there to grab a Cipher agent and former child soldier, and must use his well-honed stealth/combat/bad-ass skills to escape intact.
Players still to buy The Phantom Pain will be able to try this prologue for free, whetting their appetite for the amazing experience to come. The new ‘Reflex Mode’ features here, which gives Snake a short window of time to act within when spotted by an enemy, allowing players to avoid the usual hailstorm of bullets that comes with lax stealth. Seven missions are available to play, but various challenges add more to see and do once the storyline has been completed.
That’s it! Xbox Live has created a nice line-up for October, with something for everyone.
