Members of PS Plus have six free games to choose from in July, across the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. Let’s take a closer look …
PS4
Furi
Furi is a great little actioner, with a highly-stylised look and characters designed by the creator of Afro Samurai, Takashi Okazaki. This is a real treat for gamers craving some fast-paced, old-school action: the combat is straightforward and exciting, demanding good reflexes and timing. Viewed from an isometric angle, this feels like a unique mash-up of Robotron 2084 and Devil May Cry, set in the world of Wipeout 2097.
Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell
While this is technically an epilogue to Saints Row IV, Gat out of Hell is a standalone expansion, allowing players to enjoy it without owning IV itself. As anyone familiar with the series will expect, Gat out of Hell is a third-person shooter with an anarchic tone and plenty of action.
Heroes Johnny Gat and Kinzie Kensington have stunning open worlds at their feet, as well as superhuman skills and weapons based around the seven deadly sins (like the Greed gun, which causes enemies to drop extra Wages after being iced). This is definitely worth a try, whether you’ve played the previous games or not.
PS3
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood
The first Call of Juarez gave Western fans some authentic six-shooter fun, and Bound in Blood serves as its prequel. The game was acclaimed for its storyline and effective Old West feel, following the McCall brothers on their quest for the legendary Gold of Juarez.
This first-person shooter features duels, multi-player modes, and an immersive atmosphere taken from so many classic movies. For fans of Red Dead Redemption or Westerns in general, Bound in Blood is a great freebie.
Fat Princess
Let’s be honest: Fat Princess is one of the best titles in the history of video games.
This action RTS stars the portly princess herself, and is open to as many as 32 players. The overall goal is to rescue the young lady and take her back to your team’s base, feeding her cakes to sabotage your enemies’ efforts: after all, the more she eats, the heavier she becomes, and the harder she is to carry.
With cute graphics and engrossing gameplay, Fat Princess is a blast.
PS Vita
Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines
This belated sequel to a little-known Japanese RPG from 1999 features a distinctive set-up: players take control of a clan able to return from the grave to take down their enemies. However, each member only has two years to live, and so characters must have children before their time’s up, enabling their descendants to continue the battle.
This RPG has gorgeous visuals and an impressive length, with games able to run on for hundreds of generations. There’s a strong familial feel to the game, with parents passing on their physical features to their offspring, as well as the ability to create heirlooms and take snapshots of key events for posterity.
Prince of Persia: Revelations
Revelations is a port of Warrior Within, the sequel to The Sands of Time (the reboot that helped to make the Prince of Persia franchise so huge). The game is a 3D platformer, with plenty of exploration and close combat, as well as distinctive freerunning mechanics.
