Who Is Max Caulfield (And Why Do Her Friends Keep Dying)?

Release Date: October 29 (TWO WEEKS early with Ultimate Edition)

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

If you’ve played the original Life Is Strange or Before the Storm, then Max is a character who needs no introduction. But if you haven’t, let’s rewind:

Max Caulfield: an ordinary person with an extraordinary ability to harness the power of time and Shift between two parallel timelines.

We were first introduced to Max Caulfield as a shy and introspective 18-year-old student attending Blackwell Academy in Arcadia Bay, Oregon. Max is known for her passion for photography, her vintage Polaroid camera, and her thoughtful and observant personality.

Fast forward to Double Exposure. Max is now the photographer-in-residence at the renowned Caledon University where we find her grappling with the discovery of her new friend Safi’s lifeless body in the snow—murdered. Desperate to save her, Max attempts to “Rewind” time, a power she hasn’t used in years. But instead of reversing the moment, Max accidentally opens a gateway to a parallel timeline where Safi is still alive—and still in danger. Realizing the killer is set to strike again in both realities, Max must “Shift” between the two timelines, racing to solve the mystery and prevent the murder from happening twice.

Where does Max’s story go from here? That’s for you to decide.

Complex, Relatable Characters

One of Double Exposure’s greatest strengths is its cast of characters. Max, and the rest of the students, professors, and murderers (!) at Caledon University are all flawed, real, and relatable. As the game unfolds, you’ll get to know their fears, hopes, and doubts, all of which make the decisions you face even more impactful. The character relationships are deeply emotional, and their development throughout the story, like every other Life Is Strange title,  is one of the game’s strongest aspects.

The Choice Is Yours (And So Are the Consequences)

In Life is Strange, every choice matters, and Double Exposure takes this concept to new heights. Nearly every decision you make as the player will shape the entire world around you. From major plot twists to subtle shifts in character relationships, your choices will ripple into far-reaching effects. Needless to say, replayability is high. Unless you’re like me, where, there’s only one “correct” ending to the game…

Time Flys

Max’s ability to rewind time isn’t just a plot device—it’s a key part of the gameplay. It’s a hallmark of the Life Is Strange series, and a fresh perspective on typical choice-driven games. You can replay moments, change decisions, and witness multiple outcomes before deciding which path to take. This mechanic is integral to the game’s puzzle-solving and storytelling, and provides a rich, multi-layered experience that never feels repetitive— and never ceases to surprise.

The Continuation of a Story You’ll Never Forget

Like every other Life is Strange game, by the end of Double Exposure you’ll have unfolded a story that will stay with you forever– no matter the choices you made. The narrative weaves through themes of regret, loss, and self-discovery, as Max navigates her personal life through the lens of the larger mysteries surrounding Caledon University.
