Firaxis has taken the Civilization formula to the next level, refining core gameplay while introducing exciting new mechanics that will change how players approach their grand strategies. Here are some of the biggest updates:

Core Gameplay Changes

  • A Shorter Path to Glory: For those who prefer quicker sessions, Civ 7 includes a new, shorter game mode that is designed to prevent games from dragging on too long.
  • Unique Stories Unfold: The new Emergent Narrative System introduces narrative events that will influence your game and create a unique storyline for every campaign. Every game will become a unique and unpredictable story of your making.
  • Introducing “Ages”: Say goodbye to the familiar progression through eras. Civ 7 introduces a dynamic three-act structure: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Each age presents unique challenges, and you’ll choose a new civilization at the start of each new age, allowing for unprecedented strategic combinations. Your chosen leader, however, will remain with you throughout the ages. This is not just a change; it’s a fundamental shift that promises a fresh and engaging experience every time you play.
  • Crisis and Opportunity: As each age ends… prepare for a Crisis Event. These are not just minor setbacks; they are moments of reckoning that will force you to adapt with “Crisis Policies” to mitigate negative effects. But don’t worry! These crises are followed by a soft reset as you move to a new age where wars end, city-states are refreshed, and you can even relocate your capital. It’s a chance to regroup, re-strategize, and emerge stronger than before.
  • Your Legacy, Your Way: Civ 7 introduces “Legacy Paths”. These paths provide clear milestones and bonuses that encourage you to pursue specific goals. Want to be a cultural powerhouse? Focus on building World Wonders. Prefer scientific dominance? Invest in research. These paths allow you to steer your civilization towards the type of victory you want and tailor your playstyle to your preferences.

Units and Resources

  • Towns and Cities Evolved: Forget the old ways of expansion. Settlers now establish towns that focus on gold production, allowing you to rapidly build up your economy. You decide when to convert towns into cities to expand, and you’ll directly manage tile expansion. This means more control, more strategy, and more exciting choices to make.
  • No More Workers: Traditional workers have been replaced with a more streamlined system where improvements like mines and farms are automatically constructed on new tiles, simplifying the micromanagement without compromising on strategic depth.
  • Districts, Simplified: Civ 7 reimagines districts. Instead of predefined district types, you’ll now designate tiles as rural for improvements or urban for buildings. You can customize each urban district with two buildings, giving you unprecedented flexibility in city planning.
  • Commanders Lead the Charge: Forget about experience points for regular units. Now, you’ll have powerful Commanders. These special military units not only gain experience and promotions but also provide passive bonuses to nearby units and offer tactical commands in battle, so military strategy will be totally changed.
  • Influence is King: A new currency, Influence, adds an exciting layer to diplomacy. Use it to forge alliances with city-states, engage in military pacts, or even sabotage rival civilizations. Your choices matter more than ever.

And finally…

  • Rivers are now Navigable!: Yes!! You can now use your ships on rivers, opening up new possibilities for trade and conquest.

Rewrite World History | Choose Your Leader

Civilization 7 Review - IGN
Leaders in Civ 7 are now free agents, no longer tied to specific civilizations. This means you can play as Hatshepsut leading the Roman Empire or Napoleon commanding the Dutch, creating interesting alternate history scenarios. Civ 7 features a diverse range of leaders, going beyond traditional rulers and including figures like Machiavelli and Harriet Tubman. Plus, Civilizations are now tied to specific ages, adding historical context to the game. For example, you can only play as Egypt during the Antiquity Age.
